Supreme Court asked to decide if Trump has immunity from prosecution
Federal prosecutors have asked the US Supreme Court to quickly rule on whether former President Donald Trump has immunity from prosecution so that his trial on charges of conspiring to overturn the 2020 election can proceed as scheduled. Special Counsel Jack Smith, in a filing to the Supreme Court, emphasized the importance of resolving the question of a former President's immunity from federal prosecution for crimes committed while in office. The Supreme Court, which has a conservative majority, including three justices nominated by Trump, will expedite consideration of the request. Trump's trial is set to begin on March 4, 2024.
